DELF B1 Exercises: Practise and Master the Intermediate Level
DELF B1 is the intermediate level of French and one of the most widely recognised diplomas worldwide. These exercises mirror the exact format and difficulty of the official exam.
B1 Listening: What to Expect
The compréhension orale at B1 includes radio reports, interviews and conversations between several speakers. Topics are varied: society, culture, technology, work. You need to identify the main idea, the important details and the speakers' attitude — and you'll have to do it from a single or double listening, so trained attention matters as much as vocabulary.
B1 Reading: Types of Document
At B1 you'll read press articles, novel extracts, formal and informal letters, and simple administrative documents. The vocabulary is richer and the texts longer than at A2. You need to infer the meaning of unknown words from context rather than expecting to recognise every word.
B1 Writing: The Formal Letter
The production écrite at B1 asks you to write a text of 160-180 words, often a formal letter of complaint, a response to an article, or a simple opinion piece. You must use advanced connectors and structure your text with an introduction, a development and a conclusion.
Practice exercises
"Le covoiturage connaît un essor remarquable en France. De plus en plus de conducteurs partagent leur trajet pour réduire leurs dépenses." — What does "essor remarquable" mean?
"Si j'avais plus de temps, je ___ davantage."
What does "avoir le cafard" mean?
Exam tips
- In the B1 reading paper, read the questions first so you know exactly what to look for in the text
- For the subjunctive, learn the triggers that call for it: *vouloir que*, *il faut que*, *craindre que* — English has no equivalent mood, so these triggers are your only cue
- The production écrite at B1 requires a minimum of 160 words — always count before you hand it in
- Practise with French news headlines and articles (RFI Savoirs, 1 jour 1 actu)
- In the oral exam, use opinion connectors: *à mon avis*, *selon moi*, *je pense que*, *il me semble que*
