DELF B1 Writing: A Guide with Model Answers

The production écrite of DELF B1 is one of the biggest challenges of the intermediate level. You must show you can write a coherent, well-linked text of 160-180 words, with varied vocabulary, appropriate connectors and a clear structure.

Types of Text in DELF B1

B1 has two writing tasks: (1) A short fill-in task (completing a more detailed form, writing a short note or message). (2) The main text of 160-180 words, which can be: a formal letter of complaint or request, a response to an article or survey, or a text expressing your opinion on a proposed topic.

The Formal Letter at B1: Model Structure

Structure of a B1 formal letter: (1) Place and date (top right). (2) Recipient: "À l'attention de..." or "Madame, Monsieur," as the opening. (3) Subject line: "Objet: Réclamation concernant...". (4) Introduction: context and reason for writing. (5) Development: facts, arguments or request. (6) Closing: "Dans l'attente de votre réponse, je vous adresse mes salutations distinguées."
