French Conditionnel: Uses and Conjugation
The conditionnel is a verb mood that expresses hypotheses, conditions, politeness, wishes and unconfirmed facts. It's one of the most widely used moods in both written and spoken French. In DELF B2, the conditionnel is assessed in both written production (argumentation) and listening comprehension (news reports).
Forming the conditionnel présent
The conditionnel présent is formed using the same stem as the futur simple + the imparfait endings (-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient). Regular verbs: parler → je parlerais, finir → je finirais, vendre → je vendrais. Irregular verbs (same irregular stem as the futur): être → je serais, avoir → j'aurais, aller → j'irais, faire → je ferais, pouvoir → je pourrais, vouloir → je voudrais.
Uses of the conditionnel présent
The conditionnel présent has several key uses: (1) Hypotheses and unreal conditions (si + imparfait + conditionnel): Si j'avais de l'argent, j'achèterais une maison (If I had money, I would buy a house). (2) Politeness and soft requests: Je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît. Pourriez-vous m'aider? (I would like a coffee, please. Could you help me?). (3) Advice: Tu devrais dormir davantage (You should sleep more). (4) Wishes and dreams: Je voudrais voyager au Japon (I would like to travel to Japan). (5) Unconfirmed facts (in journalism): Selon des sources, le gouvernement envisagerait des réformes (According to sources, the government is reportedly considering reforms).
Conditionnel passé
The conditionnel passé expresses what would have happened under different circumstances. It's formed with the conditionnel présent of avoir/être + past participle. Examples: j'aurais mangé (I would have eaten), elle serait venue (she would have come). Main use: hypotheses about the past with si + plus-que-parfait: Si j'avais su, je n'aurais pas accepté (If I had known, I wouldn't have accepted). This tense appears frequently in texts about hypothetical past situations at DELF B2/C1 level.
The conditionnel in reported speech and journalism
In French news writing, the conditionnel is required to express unconfirmed or reported facts. This is the so-called 'conditionnel journalistique': Le président démissionnerait demain (The president is said to be resigning tomorrow). This use distinguishes verified facts (indicatif) from rumors or unconfirmed sources (conditionnel). It's a key analytical point in DELF B2 reading comprehension.
Conditionnel vs Futur: the classic mix-up
Many learners confuse the futur simple and the conditionnel présent because their forms are almost identical. The difference lies in the ending: the futur ends in -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont. The conditionnel ends in -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. Example: je parlerai (I will speak, futur) vs je parlerais (I would speak, conditionnel). In pronunciation, je parlerai ends in /-e/ while je parlerais ends in /-ɛ/.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the conditionnel after a conditional si, mirroring an instinct from English's would-clauses: *Si j'aurais le temps instead of Si j'avais le temps. The conditionnel never follows si in a conditional clause.
- Confusing the futur and conditionnel endings: -ai/-ais, -a/-ait, -ont/-aient — a distinction English speakers often miss since 'will' and 'would' sound quite different, but the French forms are nearly identical in speech.
- Missing the conditionnel journalistique in reading comprehension: when you see it, it signals 'reportedly' or 'according to sources', much like English 'is said to' or 'allegedly'.
- Thinking je voudrais only works for ordering food: it works for any polite request or wish.
