DALF C1 Exercises: Master the Advanced Level of French
The DALF C1 is the first advanced-level diploma, and it demands a different kind of stamina than anything you've faced before. These exercises target the exact skills the exam rewards: parsing dense authentic documents, writing an objective synthèse, and arguing with real sophistication.
Listening comprehension at C1: what you're up against
The compréhension orale of the DALF C1 throws you into academic lectures, panel debates, and complex documentaries. You need to track the main thesis, the secondary arguments, each speaker's position, and the finer shades of the discourse. Every recording plays only ONCE — there is no second pass, which is one of the biggest adjustments for candidates coming from lower levels.
The synthèse de documents: the C1's signature test
The synthèse de documents is the most distinctive and demanding part of the DALF C1, and it has no real equivalent in English-language exams — candidates who assume it works like an essay or a literature review lose points immediately. You must objectively condense 2-3 documents on a shared theme into a 220-word text. The rules are strict: you cannot copy whole sentences from the sources, you cannot give your own opinion, and you must reformulate everything in your own words.
Speaking production at C1: the presentation and the debate
The production orale of the DALF C1 includes a 10-minute prepared presentation, built from source documents in 60 minutes, followed by a debate of about 20 minutes with the examiner (30 minutes of exam in total). You need to show critical analysis, academic vocabulary, and the ability to argue fluidly under pressure — not read from a script.
Practice exercises
"Cette étude corrobore l'hypothèse selon laquelle..." ¿Qué significa "corrobore" ?
"Elle a affirmé que son équipe ___ les résultats dès le lendemain."
When writing a C1 synthèse de documents, what is FORBIDDEN?
Exam tips
- Read authentic academic French: La Recherche, Pour la Science, Sciences Humaines
- The synthèse explicitly bans copying, so practice reformulation (paraphrase) every single day
- For C1 you need the vocabulaire des discours: énoncer, développer, illustrer, conclure
- C1 listening plays only ONCE: take active notes during the recording, because you cannot get it back
- In the C1 oral debate, anticipate likely questions and prepare responses to counter-arguments in advance
