French Double Object Pronoun Exercises C1

Double object pronouns (a direct and an indirect object pronoun in the same sentence) are one of the trickier features of C1-level French. Their order is strict and, unlike English — which usually keeps the full noun or a "to him/her" phrase rather than stacking two pronouns — follows fixed rules of its own. Mastering them is essential for producing fluent, natural texts in the DALF C1.

The word order rule for double pronouns

When two object pronouns appear together, the order is: me/te/se/nous/vous + le/la/les (before the verb). But: direct object (le/la/les) + lui/leur (third-person indirect object): "je le lui donne" (I give it to him/her). In the affirmative imperative: verb + direct object + indirect object: "donne-le-lui!" In the negative imperative: ne + me/te/le/la + lui/leur + verb.

The pronouns en/y at C1 level

"En" replaces "de + noun phrase": "tu veux du gâteau? — Oui, j'en veux." "Y" replaces "à + place or noun phrase": "tu vas à Paris? — Oui, j'y vais." With double pronouns: "il y en a beaucoup" (il y = there, en = of it/them). At C1 level these uses appear in complex contexts.

Double pronouns in C1 spoken production

In the DALF C1, fluency with double pronouns is a marker of level. In spoken production, avoid repeating a noun object once it has already been mentioned: use pronouns instead. "Tu as donné le livre à Paul? — Oui, je le lui ai donné hier." Practise these substitutions with real texts.

Exam tips

  • Practise substituting objects in your own sentences. Start with simple sentences and add complexity gradually.
  • In spoken production, correctly using double pronouns demonstrates a solid C1 level.
  • The past participle with avoir agrees with a preceding direct object: "les règles que je vous ai expliquées" (feminine plural).
