DELF A1 Written Production: A Guide with Examples
The written production section of the DELF A1 is where you prove you can write French in very simple situations. Filling in a form, writing a postcard, or sending a short message are the typical tasks at this level.
What does the production écrite of the A1 ask for?
The A1 has two exercises: the first asks you to fill in a form (nom, prénom, nationalité, adresse, etc.), and the second asks you to write a short message of 40-50 words, usually a postcard or a brief email to a friend.
Example of an A1 written production task
Typical prompt: "Vous êtes en vacances à Paris. Vous écrivez une carte postale à votre ami(e). Vous lui parlez du temps, des activités que vous faites et vous l'invitez à venir vous rendre visite." (40-50 mots).
The most common mistakes in A1 written production
The most frequent mistakes are: dropping articles (le, la, les) the way English often does without one, mixing up être and avoir, confusing masculine and feminine, and writing fewer words than required. Always count your words before you finish.

Exam tips
- Always read the consigne (task prompt) twice: make sure you answer exactly what's being asked.
- Reuse words from the consigne in your answer — it's a valid and effective strategy.
- Write at least the required number of words: 40-50 words for the A1.
- Use simple connectors: et (and), mais (but), aussi (also), parce que (because).
- Double-check gender and number agreement at the end: le/la, un/une.
