DELF A1 Exercises: Practice and Get Ready for the Exam
The DELF A1 tests your ability to understand and produce very simple French. These exercises mirror the real exam format and help you spot your weak points before test day.
What kind of exercises does the DELF A1 include?
The DELF A1 has four sections: compréhension de l'oral (20 min, 25 points), compréhension des écrits (30 min, 25 points), production écrite (30 min, 25 points), and production orale (5-7 min, 25 points). The texts are short, everyday, and the vocabulary stays very basic.
Listening comprehension A1: what to expect
In the compréhension orale of the A1, you'll hear simple messages, announcements, and short conversations. Questions are true/false or multiple choice. Each recording plays twice. Practice with simple, everyday conversations to get used to the pace.
Written production A1: key advice
The production écrite A1 asks you to fill in a form, write a postcard, or write a short message (40-50 words). Stick to the basic vocabulary you already know, and don't worry about sounding sophisticated: simplicity and accuracy score the highest marks.
Practice exercises
Read the following notice: "La bibliothèque sera fermée le lundi 15 décembre pour travaux." What information does this text give?
How do you say "What's your name?" in French?
Completa: "Marie et Pierre ___ étudiants."
Exam tips
- Learn the numbers from 1 to 100 before the exam — they show up constantly in both listening and reading.
- Memorize the articles le, la, les, un, une, des: English only has 'the' and 'a', so French gender needs to be learned noun by noun.
- In the written production, pay close attention to the spelling of conjugated verbs.
- Practice greetings, introductions, and basic questions — they are the heart of the A1 oral exam.
- Listen to simple French songs to get used to the rhythm and sounds of the language.
