DALF C1 Exam Format: Complete Guide to the Advanced Level
The DALF C1 is structured very differently from the DELF levels: the tests are longer, the documents are authentic, and the standard is academic. Knowing the format in detail is essential for planning your preparation and managing your time on exam day.
The 4 tests of the DALF C1 in detail
(1) Compréhension de l'oral: 40 min, 25 pts. 2 authentic documents (each played only ONCE). (2) Compréhension des écrits: 50 min, 25 pts. (3) Production écrite: 2h 30min, 25 pts — synthèse (220 words) + essai (250 words). (4) Production orale: 60 min of preparation, then roughly 30 min in front of the jury (presentation and debate), 25 pts. The collective papers run about 4 hours; the oral is sat on another day.
The key difference: a single listen in the oral test
In the DALF C1 and C2, each oral document is played only ONCE, unlike the DELF (where every recording plays twice). This difference is fundamental and calls for a different note-taking strategy. You must extract as much information as possible from a single listen.
DALF C1 grading criteria
Written production (synthèse): cohérence et cohésion, compétence lexicale, correction grammaticale, orthographe. Written production (essai): mise en œuvre de la langue, cohérence et cohésion, compétence lexicale. Exam tips
- C1 runs ~5h 30min: build your concentration stamina with long study sessions
- The 2h 30min of the written production is yours to distribute between synthèse and essai: practice managing that time
- The single listen in the C1 oral is the biggest shock for candidates coming from the DELF: train it specifically
- For the oral test, practice presenting for exactly 10 minutes — no more, no less
