What is the TCF?

The Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF) is the official exam from the Centre international d'études pédagogiques (CIEP) that measures your level of French with a score from 100 to 699 points, equivalent to CEFR levels A1 to C2.

Unlike the DELF/DALF, the TCF has no pass or fail: you get a score that corresponds to a level. It is widely accepted for immigration to France, Quebec, Belgium and Switzerland, as well as for French-speaking university admissions.

Frequently asked questions about the TCF

What is the difference between the TCF and the DELF?
The TCF is a standardised test that assesses your level with a score (100–699) without a fixed level. The DELF is a certification by levels (A1, A2, B1, B2) that you pass or fail. For immigration or universities in Quebec and France, the TCF is usually required. For schools and general degree programmes, the DELF is more common.
What are the TCF ANF and the TCF DAP?
The TCF ANF (Accès à la Nationalité Française) is for applying for French nationality. The TCF DAP (Demande d'Admission Préalable) is for university enrolment in France. Both include mandatory oral and written expression modules in addition to the compulsory comprehension tests.
How long are TCF results valid?
TCF results are valid for 2 years from the exam date for most institutional purposes. For French nationality (TCF ANF), the validity period may differ depending on the prefecture.
How many times can you retake the TCF?
You can sit the TCF as many times as you like, with no limit on attempts. However, you must wait at least 30 days between sittings. DELFOnline helps you improve significantly on each attempt with full mock exams and personalised analysis.
