French A2 Expressions: Phrases for Everyday Situations
For the DELF A2 you need expressions that let you give your opinion, talk about the past, agree or disagree, and get by in everyday situations like a doctor's visit, the bank, or a shop.
Expressions for Giving Your Opinion at A2
To express an opinion at A2: "Je pense que..." (I think that...), "Je trouve que..." (I find that...), "À mon avis..." (In my opinion...), "Je suis d'accord" (I agree), "Je ne suis pas d'accord" (I disagree), "C'est vrai que..." (It's true that...), "Moi, j'aime / je n'aime pas..." (I like / I don't like...).
Expressions for Past Narration
To talk about the past at A2: "L'autre jour..." (The other day), "Il y a X jours/mois..." (X days/months ago), "Quand j'étais enfant..." (When I was a child), "À cette époque-là..." (At that time), "J'ai eu la chance de..." (I was lucky enough to), "Ça s'est très bien passé" (It went well). Trap: actuellement = currently, not actually.
Expressions for Everyday Situations
In a shop: "Je voudrais..." (I'd like...), "Vous avez...?" (Do you have...?), "C'est trop cher" (That's too expensive). At the doctor's: "J'ai mal au/à la..." (My... hurts), "Depuis quand ?" (Since when?). On transport: "À quelle heure part le train pour...?" (What time does the train for... leave?).

Exam tips
- Learn the opinion expressions — they're the backbone of your A2 speaking test.
- Use "il y a" and "depuis" correctly: mixing them up is one of the most common A2 mistakes for English speakers, since English handles "ago" and "for/since" quite differently.
- In everyday situations, the polite conditional (je voudrais) always beats je veux.
- Practise a 2-minute monologue about a day from your past using the expressions you've learned.
