DELF A1 Expressions: Essential Phrases to Communicate
In the DELF A1, fixed expressions are your best friends. Memorizing the most common phrases for greeting people, introducing yourself, asking for information, and responding in everyday situations will give you confidence in the oral exam and richer language in the written test.
Greeting and saying goodbye
The basic greetings are essential: "Bonjour !" (Good morning/hello), "Bonsoir !" (Good evening), "Salut !" (Hi! informal), "Au revoir !" (Goodbye), "À bientôt !" (See you soon!), "À demain !" (See you tomorrow!), "Bonne journée !" (Have a nice day!).
Expressions for introducing yourself
"Je m'appelle..." (My name is...), "J'ai X ans" (I am X years old), "Je suis de..." (I'm from...), "J'habite à..." (I live in...), "Je travaille comme..." (I work as...), "Je suis étudiant(e)" (I'm a student), "Enchanté(e) !" (Nice to meet you!).
Expressions for asking for information
"Excusez-moi..." (Excuse me...), "Où est...?" (Where is...?), "C'est combien ?" (How much is it?), "Il y a...?" (Is there...?), "Je ne comprends pas" (I don't understand), "Pouvez-vous répéter ?" (Can you repeat that?), "Parlez-vous anglais ?" (Do you speak English?).

Exam tips
- Learn expressions as whole chunks, not just the translation — pay attention to the context where each one is used.
- Practice the expressions out loud to memorize them better.
- In the oral exam, if you don't understand something, do NOT stay silent: use 'Pouvez-vous répéter ?'
- Polite expressions (s'il vous plaît, merci, excusez-moi) always earn you points.
