DELF B2 sample letter: model argumentative text
In the DELF B2, the "letter" is actually a 250-word argumentative text that can take the form of an opinion piece, an open letter, or a critical response. This guide walks you through a fully annotated model example.
The difference between the B1 letter and the B2 argumentative text
At B1, the formal letter was a structured complaint with fixed formulas. At B2, the text can take many more forms: a letter to the editor, a response to an article, a free opinion piece. The argumentative demand is much higher: you must defend a thesis with multiple arguments and anticipate counter-arguments.
Model B2 text: a letter to a newspaper editor
(continues with arguments, counter-arguments and conclusion).
Detailed plan for the B2 text
Before writing, build a plan: (1) Introduction: set the topic in context and announce your plan. (2) Thesis: your main position. (3) Argument 1 + concrete example. (4) Argument 2 + concrete example. (5) Anti-thesis: acknowledging the opposing argument (concession). (6) Refutation of the anti-thesis. (7) Conclusion: synthesis and final position.

Exam tips
- A plan is mandatory at B2: without structure, a text loses points even with good vocabulary
- Concession is the proof of argumentative maturity: learn to acknowledge the opposing argument
- Every argument needs a concrete example: it makes the point convincing and shows real knowledge
- The first sentence of each paragraph states the argument; the rest of the paragraph develops it
- A letter to the editor always opens with "Monsieur / Madame le/la Directeur/trice," — don't forget it
