DELF A2 Exam Format: A Complete Guide with Timings
Knowing the exact structure of the DELF A2 lets you plan your preparation and manage your time on exam day. The A2 is longer and more demanding than the A1, with more complex texts and a more elaborate written and spoken production.
The 4 DELF A2 Tests in Detail
(1) Compréhension de l'oral: 25 min, 25 pts. 4 audio documents, each played twice. Types: voicemail message, announcement, everyday conversation. (2) Compréhension des écrits: 30 min, 25 pts. 3-4 written documents (letters, ads, short articles). (3) Production écrite: 45 min, 25 pts. 2 tasks: completing a document + writing a 60-80 word message. (4) Production orale: 6-8 min, 25 pts. 3 parts: entretien dirigé, monologue suivi, exercice en interaction. Note: passer un examen means "to sit an exam," not "to pass" (réussir).
A2 Speaking: The Three Parts Explained
(1) Entretien dirigé (3-4 min): a conversation with the examiner about your life, your experiences, and simple opinions. (2) Monologue suivi (2-3 min): you present a situation based on one or two photos showing everyday events. (3) Exercice en interaction (2-3 min): a role-play with the examiner in a real-life situation (shop, hotel booking, doctor's visit).
How A2 Speaking Is Assessed
A2 speaking is assessed against 4 criteria: (1) Lexical range — vocabulary variety. (2) Interaction ability — how naturally the exchange flows. (3) Phonological control — understandable pronunciation. (4) Sociolinguistic command — register appropriate to the situation. Each criterion is worth between 3 and 7 points depending on the task.
